Oy, why’d you have to throw number 10 out there? Can’t I just keep up my pack-a-day habit and keep reciting “even if I quit, there’s not a chance in hell I’d stop”?

I’ve actually got a #11, and that’s that a successful blogger knows when he’s spreading himself too thin. I think this is something you realize after you’ve done it, more than before you do it.

For example, I tried to balance three different blogs, and a month later when posting had dried up, I added two more as if it would help me to get the fire back.

Unfortunately, I realized that was terribly unrealistic, and thus I have now put all the helpful advice into one blog, and kept a personal update one. I think it’ll probably be easier now to do my “one post per day” goal if it’s only to two sources, rather than five posts a day on top of programming, a half-hearted social life, and a quarter-hearted attempt at being healthy and active.

I think it’s way too easy to not do anything while you’re trying to do everything.

I think #9 is an important reminder. It’s too easy to become focused on the numbers game and forget that quality content with lasting value is what builds long-term readership.

@Ulla: Look around for examples. Study your niche and the results of similar bloggers. It will be easier to evaluate yourself based on a comparison. Also, bloggers have a lot of tools at their disposal to help them receive feedback from their readers. Try them.

@Robin: Indeed, while the first 6 characteristics could be considered common sense, the later can stand for attributes of success in any field. Great observation!

Think numbers 7-10 are the most interesting. The others might be considered generally accepted common sense. But the genuine dangers of complacency (whether it be in terms of actual activity, or standard of content), health and the need to improve and be open to change are important factors for professional improvement in any sphere, and often overlooked.

I think your 10 points are describing a successful blogger very well. It’s #8 which I have difficulties with. To know one’s value – hmmm…

@Bamboo: People seams to be neglecting health issues until it’s too late, and when it’s too late, it will interfere with everything you need to do, besides taking care of yourself. So, taking care a bit daily can improve performance.

Number 10 is certainly an interesting addition to your top 10. Being a good blogger is more encompassing than we may have initially thought.
