Are You Having One Night Stands?
2 o’clock in the morning. 10 long hours of work, productive but tiresome. I needed to do something to get me out of this state, so I decided to go out.
I’m pretty much a night bird. At night I work best, at night I seem to have the best fun, and at night I’m a totally different person than during daytime. Ha, I know what you’re thinking. No, I’m no vampire, sorry to disappoint you, but me and Count Dracula are not relatives.
I simply enjoy the dim lights on the streets. I love to take walks in the dark and see wherever my feet carry me, and tonight I’m going to do just that.
Got out of the home and started walking. Turning left. Going ahead. Turning right. Ahead again. And there I was. I’ve never been to this club before. “The Atmosphere”. Sounds interesting, and judging by the crowd waiting to get in, it seems pretty popular too.
After a few moments I managed to get in. Loud music, loud people, lots of smoke and disco lights. But the people, they caught my attention. In my whole life, I’ve never seen so many different people in one place, all talking about things with such passion that would make you think it was the most important thing since Big Bang.
I went to the bar and asked for a drink. To my surprise, the bartender said:
Hey, don’t I know? Oh, yeah, you’re that guy, the one with the blog! How is it called… Oh right, Blogsessive!
Is this for real? When did I get so “popular”?
Man, it’s so nice to meet you. I’ve been reading you blog regularly. You know, I’m a blogger myself. Cocktail recipes. Big surprise right? Ha, ha! Mate, this drink is on me!
Still a bit shocked, I thanked the bartender for his kindness and took off to find a place to sit.
In a couple of minutes I came to the conclusion that it was an impossible mission. The place was full. It seemed like every breathing soul on Earth was there!
What the… I felt a hand on my shoulder. A quick turn and there she was. Tall, brunette, dark eyes and lips with corners turned upwards, like in a constant seductive smile.
The club is jam-packed tonight.
She said.
But you can have a sit at my table. I was waiting for someone, but he failed to show up.
Such a gorgeous girl, alone? And by the looks of it, she’s looking for company. Why not!?
Thanks! I’m Alex, by the way.
Lisa, pleased to meet you. Come, let’s have a sit.
So, we sat at her table and started talking. Drink after drink, conversation took off, more intimate with each glass. Until, in the end, all we could think of was to get out of that place. And we did.
We went back to her apartment where she opened a bottle of wine. Can’t remember what it was, but it was sweet. Red and sweet. Talk about vampires, huh? Easy listening music in background, the wine, her looks, it seemed like everything was perfectly planned to get me there, and it got me. What an amazing night this has been, but…
Daylight came. We both got up and Lisa offered to make a small morning snack. To be true, I was quite hungry, so I accepted. During breakfast, we tried starting a conversation, but we just couldn’t connect anymore. Everything was different. The night was gone, the emotion wasn’t there anymore.
We finished breakfast and I got ready to leave. At the door:
Lisa, I had a wonderful time last evening. Can I get your phone number, maybe we could go out again?
And she said:
I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. Let’s keep it like this. A fun one night stand.
Obviously, I couldn’t disagree with her. After all, it was her decision, as I took the step and asked if we could take this further. So, I said good bye, and there I was, walking the streets again, heading back to my place, with the memory of Lisa, the one night stand that wouldn’t take the relationship further.
Footer notes
The above story and names are fictive. It’s definitely not an erotic story.
Replace the “Atmosphere” club with the blogosphere, jam-packed with blogs. You’ve got the bartender, Blogsessive’s loyal reader. My nightly walks, translated as those moments at night when I catch up with reading those posts published during the day. And her, Lisa, the blog where I end up after turning left and right in the blogosphere, no knowing where my clicks would lead me to.
It’s an exercise of imagination that leads to the following questions:
If I end up on your blog, will we be having a “one click stand“? Or are you ready for a commitment?
I need a good conversation, just don’t make it like my breakfast with Lisa. Make it more like the night Lisa and I spent together.

I wish you had seen size of stupid happy grin this post made on my face.
It’s awesome.
I know I can’t read whole Internet. I know I can’t be nice to everyone and interested in everyone.
But if I hang out in blogosphere long enough, filtering enourmous amount of… everything through me. I know that there are some sparks of information and relationships left for me to keep in the end. Not much, but precious.
Wow, great spin on things.
Well, I think I am already committed with blogging per se, and I hate one night stand.
I prefer a lifetime sitting…
That’s why I subscribe to tons of blogs including yours.
Mmmm, but I like one night stands. So many temptations out there, how can a girl – sorry, I mean reader – stay committed to anything?
I personally think the highest level of commitment any blogger can expect (with a few notable exceptions, e.g. Mr. Cutts) is a few return visits, once in a while. Not quite a one-night stand, and not quite a relationship. Something more like friends with benefits.
Back to my Melbourne Cup bets now – wish me luck!
Great story Alex! Loved your characters, especially the bartender
As for what Ema said, I disagree. You’ll have some loyal readers, not many, true, but blog readership does not end with friends with benefits, even if your last name isn’t Cutts
Haha! The “stupid happy grin” is on my face as well.
Great article! I remember writing a short post on blogging metaphores a while ago.
Alex, you ruined it for me! Just when things were heating up, I headed straight for the bathroom to grab some hand lotion. Then when I got back to finish the read, the story ended and you started turning things around to make a point! What’s up with that? (joke of course…)
Anyway, I found your blog when doing a search for the wp archive tag. It’s been a great visit and I really like the 3 column templates you have. I’m heading over to my blog to link to them right now.
no one recognized you as Alex Cristache or Menthoru or Blogsessive blogger until now?
let me disappoint you: I did that at Webstock, a few months ago
