Commenting gives you the best kind of traffic. You may not get many hits from the comment, but the ones you do get are more likely to be converted into readers of your blog, or at the very least, they may leave a comment!

Hi
Thank you very much for an informative article on a subject that is new to me. Not sure I understand it all at the moment so I'm just trying stuff out to see what works. So much information and so little time!

So, is this better than saying "great article, thanks"?!

Regards,

Richard

Found this post very interesting and useful. I think you're absolutely right about using your proper name. Doing that will get you recognised more, and you can sort of build an online brand out of your name. I also always use my name as that way, every time I post a comment I'm seen as the same person.

Most blog comments consist of "Good post, I agree" or "Great Stuff Alex" so when are we going to truly see more informative commenting? In fact 98% of blog post comments could have ended up on any post any where, they are so meaningless. I must confess I am always flattered by the "Found you by accident, have bookmarked and will return: very high quality posts" type of comment so feel free to leave those wherever you will! I categorize blog commentors like so:
1. yeah great post: let me get my ID everywhere online!
2. hate mail
3. buy this car off me
4. flattering but off subject
5. the intellectual response
No prizes for guessing which I hope this will be perceived as!

Nice post, I'm usually not that much a commenter myself but I just have to say after reading multiple posts at this blog I "need to do it"!

It's also kind of funny when you read the comments above; there still are a few people who add a comment without considering your tips above (which I assume they've just read).

I do agree with Sara about the just a few comments vs 50+ "awesome" comments. I could imagine a new blogger really enjoys getting a "awesome" comment rather none at all!

I think you’re okay as long as the overall balance tips towards insightful, thoughtful comments.

For instance, I’ll leave a short compliment at some of my favorite blogs because I want to support the writer.

If it’s a blog I’m a regular at, I don’t worry that the author will see it as spamming, but I think you’ve got to raise the standards if it’s a blog you comment on infrequently.

I also think the number of comments on a post can determine what’s appropriate. A newer blogger with few comments may greatly appreciate a nod, even if it’s not super in-depth. If there are already 50 “awesome!” comments, though, adding one more isn’t as meaningful.

I'm loving these comments! So rich in irony.

It took me AGES to work out those standard trackback comments on peoples blogs. I think they are awful and ruin the experience. i just thought they were spamming, and in a sense they are aren't they!?

Beautiful blog by the way. I love your reduced letter-spacing headers.

Great discussion and I wholehearty agree.

One question, though, do search engines put any less weight on comments vs. posts themsenves?

Our site has gone from zero to over 15,000 readers in a short time but we want to reach the million mark within a year. Daytona Beach News and Opinions: http://www.DaytonaPost.com

Commenting is one of the easiest way to generate interest in your own blog. I don't understand why more people don't do it. Sure lots of people leave comments, but very few leave comments which really add to the conversation going on. Nice post.

I think the main thing you hit on is that commenting is about building your reputation. If you provide enough insightful comments, people will begin to take notice of you. Your authority will start to slowly go up, and you can start to build off that.

I can't find a reason why people would like to brand their keyword instead of their name in a blog where nofollow is the default.

Agree with Bamboo Forest, avatar is also great branding opportunity. People recognize it more than names.

I have to agree with Bamboo Forest here, if you get traffic from a comment you've posted, that is indeed quality traffic most of the time. To be honest, while reading and commenting here and on other blogs, I've discovered wonderful bloggers and enriched my Bloglines list.

I try to stay away of meaningless comments. Sometimes, thought, I post short ones. But that seems to happen less and less as I have this natural tendency to rant :)
