Download Simple Balance 2.2 – Xmas Edition
Simple Balance 2.2 is now available for free downloading. Although it was previously working with the recently released WordPress 2.7, now, the theme has built-in support for threaded comments (you can reply to people’s comments with a maximum depth of 3 steps) which is a new functionality added by the latest WordPress release.
If you’re running a WordPress version prior to 2.7, fear not! The comments section has backwards compatibility.
Another cool feature has been added to the options panel and it refers to the 125×125 right sidebar banners. Now, you can also add Google AdSense code, individually, for each of your banners.
And that’s not all! Christmas is around the corner, and so’s the New Year.
New color scheme: Xmas Edition
Why not give your Simple Balance themed blog a cool new color scheme to match the Holiday spirit? A new color scheme – Xmas Edition – has been added, raising the total number of schemes to 10!
Here’s a quick preview:
Upgrading from prior versions
If you’re upgrading from 1.0 or 2.0/2.1, all you have to do is to copy the new files over the old ones, overwriting those that already exist (if you haven’t done changes to the theme) and adding the new ones.
Once you’ve uploaded the files, by simply entering the theme’s options panel (Design/Appearance > Simple Balance 2.2 CP) the new options will automatically be installed.

Jason, aside from the fact that indeed, that sidebar does not show, I can’t really find anything suspect just by looking at your blog. As you can see on the “demo”, the sidebar shows up without a problem, and also on every other server I’ve tested this version.
Can you please drop me an email with these 2 files from your blog’s FTP:
1. functions.php
2. single.php
And also, can you make sure you uploaded all files from the archive (rsidebar.php included)?

One thing i did want to add Alex: Blogs are looking more and more alike these days, sorta gimmicky. Your usual stuff from Woo, Premium etc etc..
Content seem to be pretty much the same too (wp themes, guest posts, wp tips, etc etc).
With all this spoonfed knowledge in the design world, I was wondering when you think the bubble will burst and people will start filtering out all this information?

I upgraded to WP 2.7 a week ago and wish to God that I had not. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to add photos to my posts anymore. All that happens now when I try to load a photo the screen goes stupid and freezez up on me !

okay I’ve done a little investigating…does this theme not work with Firefox? When I use IE7, I see the option and the theme changes. However, in Firefox, I do not get a simple balance CP nor is my theme changed. Thanks.

David Carrero Fdez-Baillo Most changes were made in “cp/controlpanel.php”, but there are also updates in “style.css”, “functions.php”. The old “comments.php” has become “legacy.commments.php”, while “comments.php” is basically a new file, but using elements from the old one. I think that’s about it.
Ahad Bokhari Thanks for the appreciation! As for the blogs, looking alike… well, that’s the power of “free” and/or “cheap”. In time, the success of the theme creators you mentioned (and a few others) managed to attract quite a few “followers” and created a trend. It’s just in any other field. It will pass. There are very good blog designs out there, but most of them are created by freelancers or design studios as singular client jobs, not premium themes.
You raised a good question. In my opinion, people are already filtering out content, and while on the surface it may seem “the same”, there are tons of factors already influencing the readers decision: from the choice of words and grammar to the level of details and info.
I believe that at the moment, readers tend to look for new content on “smaller” blogs, as they seem more “original” in thinking and writing.
Paull Hamilton Couldn’t say as it works well for me. I know there is/was a problem with the latest Adobe Flash Player plugin, when it came to the image upload script, but I’m not sure if that’s your case.
djupi Thanks for the heads up. Problem has been fixed and theme repacked and reuploaded.
Christy I have both Firefox and IE7 installed and none seems to create any problems, nor they were reported before. I’m using Firefox 3 (3.0.5) and everything looks fine. A friend of my said that on Firefox 2, the new WP 2.7 interface does look a little weird and “broken”, but I’m not sure that’s the case.

I figured out the problem as far as firefox – I had to completely delete my other “skin” before everything would show up. But hey it worked!

I wanted to let you know that I love the Simple Balance 2.2 theme. It is a great theme. Thank you for taking the time to develop it and thanks for releasing it at no cost!
I have a question about 2 plugins that do not function with Simple Balance 2.2. Both plugins do the same thing, they provide a WYSIWYG editor in the comments window. The plugins are Wp NicEdit and TinyMCEComments.
Actually the WYSIWYG editors work fine for comments that aren’t nested, but as soon as you try to reply to a comment (nest it), you’re unable to put your cursor in the text box.
Can you install one of the plugins (either is fine, I prefer TinyMCEcomments) and try to reproduce/fix the behavior? I appreciate any time & effort you can put forth.

Salmen I’m sorry but I don’t know what caused that error and also, I’m pretty sure it’s not related to the theme but rather to your installation of WP and maybe some of your database/hosting settings.
DebtFreek: I’ll try and install the plugins and test them, but from what you’re telling me it could be a problem with WP 2.7’s nested comments rather than with the theme itself.
flöschen: At this moment it’s not possible because the script was wrote in a different way. I will investigate your idea though.

I love our themes and the fact that you have a control panel to handle basic functions. Having recently moved from the totally free, point and click world of wordpress.com to getting my own host and getting going on the wordpress.org side, it’s nice to run into your themes that make life so much easier.
PROBLEM: I can’t get my right sidebar ads to show up anymore. I was playing with different options and it eventually stopped showing up. I tried replacing the rightads.php and functions.php files but no success by just doing that. Any pointers?
Hey Alex. I would like to disable threaded/nested comments on my site. I’ve disabled them from the wordpress options (under settings->discussion) but they still show up nested on my blog. Is there something I can do?

Kristi Daeda I’m thinking that it could be due to one of the widgets you use. Maybe it exceeds the allowed space. Even if not visually, but maybe with a margin or a padding. Worth looking into it. And of course, the original CSS if you’ve tweaked it.
edo & City Girl I’ll check out the Platinum SEO Plugin and see what causes the problem, but it seems to me that edo managed to solve the problem. Maybe you could share the solution?
Hello Alex; Just started considering your Simple theme and like it very much. The control panel is a perfect addition over most themes. As I am looking at the demo on this site I am not able to fill in the space at the top of the page as you have. Mine is empty from the logo text on the left to the search bar on the right. How may I get the use of this space? Perhaps by inserting a graphic based on the content of my site. Any suggestions on this? I wonder to if there is documentation on how to get the most from this theme. Something I would gladly pay for. Thanks
Stanley, that space that you see as available, should not be there, mostly because usually websites don’t get titles and descriptions as long as yours:
“Free Yourself From The Rising Cost Of Home Energy – Try Using Solar (title)
Stop Complaining About The Gas and Electric Bill -Try The Home Free Solar Method – DIY (description)”
So, that space is forced by the height of the 2 elements mentioned above.
A solution would be a bit of CSS tweaking in the theme’s files, and the transfer of the title/description section to the left sidebar.
If you need someone to do this for you, drop me an email and it should be solved in no time.
Hi Alex, I’ve switched to using another SEO plugin that works, and abandoned the Platinum SEO one.
Hi Alex, love your theme, am working with it in a couple places, but have this common problem: when I go to an archived post, the right sidebar gets pushed down below the post, not visible unless you scroll way down. Ideas? See the link I’ve attached above.

Sue, I managed to find the problem and also find a solution. This only happens to blogs that allow comments from registered and logged in users.
In a few moments I’ll publish a fix for this on the blog. Also, the download package is already updated to include the fix, and you can simply download it and replace the “comments.php” file of your theme with the one inside the package.

First off, let me say THANK YOU for a great theme(s)!
I wanted to add a border around all of the posts (as a whole) in all of the pages in order to subtly differentiate from the left and right side bars.
And I also wanted to add some what of a footer on each post to separate the posts on pages where there are multiple posts.
What code could I use, and where should I put it?

If i have do change to the theme,so I have to manually make the same change in the new theme?
Jes, you have to have a little bit of CSS knowledge in order to do that. The file you should edit would be “style.css”, but I would advise you to do so only if you’re up to it, or ask an expert.
hypfx, any change that you do to the theme’s code has to be done again if you replace the files. Changes made in the control panel will remain even if you change the theme files, since they are stored in the database.

I noticed one problem: when clicking on links, all design slide right. About 10px. Then is returned. I saw this in IE 8 and Google Chrome. You have ideas? See for example – Preview Simple Balance 2.2

Serge, that’s no problem. A website page loads progressively from top to bottom. Until it has loaded the first screen, you see no scroll bar, but when the loaded area exceeds the screen height, the scroll bar appears. That’s the “slide” you notice. It’s a natural behavior in certain browsers.

SeriesDB, I’ve tested this feature a thousand times with each skin of the theme, adjusting settings and so on. I’ve even tested it again, now, on the demo server. It works.
Make sure you haven’t deleted anything in the CSS.. like floats, or the database settings.
How to divide a post into pages?
Pagination seems not working with this theme.
This code ain’t showing up the pages on a post.

Thanks for making this theme available – I love the clean lines and simplicity of it.
One suggestion for a future release: more and more ad networks are moving away from the 468 x 60 banner and toward the 728 x 90 leaderboard ad unit. Seems like the existing banner spot could be replaced with a leaderboard spot that spans the middle and right columns.
This would be helpful to bloggers trying to monetize their sites.
Great Theme! Help! I’m trying to put an image/logo on the left side of the blog. How can I find the URL for my image? It’s just parked in my image folder. Unfortunately simple design doesn’t allow you to just search for it and drop it in. What to do.

I am using your theme in my site but I got in troubles when tried to make it work with the Simple Press Forum which is in my opinion the best one for WP. I suspect that the problem may be some kind of redirection inserted in the php code as it redirects me to the home page when I try to get into any of the forums I created. I have already posted in the SPF forum and its creator also thinks it may be a redirection issue.
Could you please comment if there is something of php code that it may cause this strange behavior. I can’t find it myself.

Hi-Like the theme. Thanks for sharing. Having a couple of problems. None of the Twitter plugins I’ve tried works. Some don’t show at all; others won’t connect/load tweets. Also, my Admin info doesn’t show even when the box is unchecked in. Otherwise all seems to be working well. Thanks!

The demo rums on 2.8.2 so as far as I can see the theme is compatible with 2.8.2, but haven’t done more in depth testing.
Alex–I upgraded to 2.82 today and then couldn’t see my right sidebar on the homepage. I played around with the mainindexpage code and got it back. Only trouble is that my home page post now appears at the end of the right sidebar and I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do..I’ve read back trhough the code…can you help?

While moving stuff around you deleted the “end” of the sidebar. Under the Amazon widget you should now see this: div> and it should be </div>.

I cannot get the AD banner boxes to show on all of my sites pages. I activate them via the Simple Balance control panel, yet they only show on two of the five pages.
I haven’t sold any ads–yet…but now that I have 6 months worth of contenet working for me, I plan to…I’ll need to know how to show the ads on all pages soon!

Dude! Your theme doesn’t work! Logo image doesn’t show in the content/sidebar/sidebar template, the theme is showing EVERY image from my posts on my homepage, and the theme option to show only excerpts of a post isn’t working either. And your lame reply to a WP user is (“I’m really sorry, but at this time, I cannot offer any more in depth support for SB.”)You know what: right now, fixing your lame-ass theme would be preferable… If you’re that busy, stop offering this shi*t and take it off the internet!
Your theme is not working. All my posts are not showing up and saying “not found” even though they show up fine when I switch to another theme. When I leave it in your theme it shows in the dashboard that I have 37 posts but when I go to add a new post or edit previous posts it also says “not found”. What’s up? I’ve been using your theme fine for 3 weeks and it was running fine before I went to sleep last night and now all of a sudden it isn’t working even though my site works fine with all other themse I have. Just a followup, I am running wordpress 2.8.4. I’ve been running it fine on 2.8.4 the past few days but today it is not working at all. I even tried disabling all the plugins, repairing my mysql tables, and reuploading the wordpress core files. None of it works, but yet my site runs fine on the other themes.
Mike, did you look at the permalink settings? Maybe something got screwed there.
Yes. I have left that alone. I have it as /%category%/%postname%/ I even uploaded a brand new wordpress and simple 2.2 installation into a seperate folder at http://www.nsawins.com/blog to see if that fixed it, but that doesn’t work either. Again, that folder also works with the other themese but not the simple 2.2. I can’t figure out for the life of me what is up. It was working fine all night before I went to sleep and now it just doesn’t work. It’s only the simple 2.2 theme though. Any other suggestions?
Also, my articles still show up fine on google feedburner. It’s weird.
Everything worked fine after that 1 day hiccup. Not sure what it was still…….weird. Knock on wood, everything is going good since…

Recently i tried to get it conenected to a rss feed reader to promote my blog on twitter and it gave me this eror ” A feed needs to contain publish dates or GUIDs in order to work with twitterfeed” Is ther something that can be done about this ?

For the time being there are no real plans of extra functionality added to Simple Balance.
Still, I am considering the thought of adding a drop down navigation to the top menu to include second level navigation items, and probably 1-2 more color schemes.
Right now I am focusing on a new release that I’ve been working on and will reconsider the SB update after the new launch.

Very nice theme-Simple to the point-Love it !! One thing thou I want to move the rss feed and everytime that I do I get a blank page when I refresh, it only works in the position it is in ?? I moved the Search from the Header to the left sidebar and I want to move the rss feed to the Header where the Search Box was, can’t get it to works….any ideas on how I can do this.

Yes, it wasn’t very easy. But I strongly prefer a menu structure on the left, so had to do it! You should be able to do it with some trial and error. You can also check my page code – that should help.
(Don’t readily recall how I did it – so can’t give advise right away. If you are stuck, let me know and I’ll look up the sidebar code).

I had problem with my post content. Why all the contents are bold? Is there anything wrong the style.css?
Because you have opened a B or STRONG tag while copying that content from Word (maybe) or another text editor and it’s not closed. So, it affects the rest of the content too.

Yes, Catherine, it works with the latest 2.8.6 too, as you can see on the demo site.
I’m fairly sure the problem resides either in the HTML code you have placed in the post content, or a widget that runs HTML that has not been written correctly.

First, I’ve loved your original theme, and I’m glad I’ve found this update.
My issue is that I don’t have the box that says “subscribe to comments” at the bottom, and every plugin I try to use with the theme shuts down almost everything in my dashboard. Any ideas what I need to do?

- When I click on the category, it only diplays the title of the post and some text but no pictures. On the index page I added pics to my post, they’re displayed, but not on the category page…

There seems to be a problem with Simple Balance on Wordpress 2.9.1 (PHP 5.3.0), I’m getting this error “Warning: Parameter 1 to update_comment_type_cache() expected to be a reference”; Any ideas?
@Militaru: It was reported before 2.9.1, check the comments above. It’s not a WP specific bug, but a conflict with a certain version of PHP installed on the hosting server.
