Update: Simple Balance 2.1 has been released. Even more options and color schemes and still FREE.

Here it is folks, Simple Balance 2.0 – a free, simple WordPress theme with enough options to make it “premium-like”.

After launching the first version (1.0) in July, I’ve decided that the next release should not be an intermediary version, but rather a real, meaningful update. And that’s how Simple Balance 2.0 was born.

Simple Balance 2.0 is launched under a new slogan: “More Power. More Style. Your Style!” Why? Because that’s what it has to offer! More control over it’s options, advertising space, layout and color, and with each future update you’ll be able to tweak it more and more to your own style!

Let’s take a look at what Simple Balance 2.0 has to offer

Many new options have been added, most of which you can adjust through the theme’s brand new “Control Panel”.

An extensive and inclusive theme control panel;
Widget-ready sidebars;
Top advertising space (468×60 pixels);
Sidebar advertising space: Up to 8 small square banners (125×125 pixels);
Individual settings for each banner you add:
1. Custom banner URL;
2. Do Follow / No Follow witch;
3. Title and alternate text;
4. Open in a new window or same window
Master switch (on/off) for every Ad Zone;
Variable layout structure:
1. Centered content;
2. Right-aligned content;
5 new additional color schemes (more released monthly);
Option to display the default left sidebar image, use a custom one or hide it;
Custom feed URL;
Valid cross-browser tested XHTML and CSS;
SEO smart coding;
Works with WordPress 2.6.2 (tested starting with WordPress 2.5);

The Simple Balance 2.0 Control Panel

To adjust the settings closer to your needs, Simple Balance 2.0 comes with a clean, informative control panel that becomes available under the “Design” tab as soon as you activate the theme. Here’s a screenshot of the control panel:

Introducing “Color Schemes” and “Layout Positioning”

Different people have different design tastes, so, with Simple Balance 2.0 you have more control over the design, by being able to switch the content area position and to use either the default color scheme or one of the five new additional color themes:

Silver Red – For a corporate look;
Olive Green – For a more sober, yet colorful look;
Red Orange – For the fresh people;
Lucky Star – For your teenage girl diary;
Green Life – For followers of the “Green Way of Life”.

Rarst, the thing with thinner content is not really a trend, rather a necessity. You have to fit 3 columns, with enough space to not make them bulky in a resolution of maximum 990 pixels (to be available on most monitors). So, imagine the limitations designers struggle with.

I’d make sweet love to the back-end of the theme. Seriously now, I’m loving it and i didn’t just quote the McDonald’s motto.

I see you’ve tried to get a few more extra subscribers in the back-end. And let me say it’s a great idea to help Blogsessive grow.

My favorite color scheme is the silver-red one. I’m a fan of KISS, the rock band and concept.

So 3-column is trend at fault then. I completely suck at design so I can’t even imagine.

I tend to use 1:1 screenshots of software in my reviews because I think it looks good and illustrative. With some it’s really hard to fit in 530px width theme allows. Can’t even imagine going below 500px for screenshot.

After working together with Joseph, who left a comment above, we’ve found a small bug that only appeared based on some rare server settings.

Good teamwork solved the problem and now the version available for download fixed this rare bug.

Are you sure you’re using version 2.0, and not 1.0? Have you downloaded the package from this post’s links? Did you activate the theme and then looked for the Administration Panel under the “Design Tab”?

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed this awesome theme, thanks for creating and sharing it. but I am having a similar issue to someone mentioned above and I wondered if there was a fix

at the moment im running it on my local server, I downloaded the latest version etc, but none of the changes I make in the admin cp are taking effect, it seems to be just ignoring them so I can’t change the color,layout etc?

it is an awesome theme though:)

Hi Martin, thanks for the kind words. I’ve talked to the person you mention in private and it seems that he was trying to apply the changes while using Internet Explorer, but the second he switched to Firefox he was able to update the options.

That’s a strange behavior and will get fixed with the next update, rather sooner than later.

Try it and let me know if this solves your problem.

Yup!

That worked a treat in firfox, thanks!. Wonder why they cant make a browser standard that they all share, so things display, work etc, correctly across all browsers. surely that would make a designers job easier..

Anyway, all good to go now and fully operational.

I tested the theme but the custom image on the top of the sidebar is not displayed. It says it should be 200px wide but will it accept images with less than 200 pixels wide

Anand: Currently, that can only be achieved by manually editing the “topads.php” file in the theme folder.

Look for the following code:
```
<div class="topAd">[...]</div>
```
and replace its contents with the code provided by Google AdSense.

Your question led to an improvement that will be introduced with the next theme update. You’ll be able to activate Google AdSense through the Control Panel in the next version.

Hey Alex

Great theme there. But I ran into an issue while trying it out on my local server. It seems that the top navigation (where you show home and about links) displays “all” your pages, even the child ones, making the navigation a looong list..Is it possible to have a nav bar and a sub nav bar like most themes? e.g. take alook at my current theme at my site (http://tech.shantanugoel.com/)

In regards to the email subscription form. That is only a design template that you have to edit yourself to include subscription code from FeedBurner or FeedBlitz.

It’s impossible for me as a theme designer to know your account and automate the process. Or at least, I don’t know of such a method, yet.

Edit: I just wrote step by step tutorial for FeedBurner Email Subscription Form integration in Simple Balance 2.0.

Jason, the 503 error is a server error. It’s related to the actual machine hosting your website and not to your applications (in any case not because of the theme).

I’m having a very strange problem with the theme. I can upload it and activate it, but it doesn’t recognize any updates (like widget changes or editing the specific parts of the theme(comments.php))

I’ve done a few modifications to the theme to fix up top menu navigation issues. If you change the wp_list_pages call in ur header.php (for topmenu div) to the following, only the top parent pages will show up in the navigation bar:
wp_list_pages(‘sort_column=menu_order&depth=1&title_li=’));
You might like to add that to the theme code or maybe provide an option for the “depth” in control panel.

I also did a few modifications that display the sub pages of any parent page below the main top menu. And if you are on any child page, then it’ll display a cascade of parent to the child page in different rows below the top main menu.

Shantanu Goel Ha, thanks for the tip. Believe it or not, I’m working as we speak on v2.1. Just implemented the option of selecting which parent pages will be displayed in the top menu.

Currently struggling with excluding one post from the main loop, without affecting the page navigation.

It’s not hard to exclude it, but let’s say you chose to display 5 posts per page. If the excluded post would have been displayed on the current page, then you’ll see a 4 posts page, which is something I don’t want.

Have to get down and dirty with the query and decrement the post count, and that my friend it’s tough.

But, I have a goal in mind, to release 2.1 today (or tomorrow for some of my readers), so it’s gonna be a long night.

Mark Unfortunately, no matter how much I try to figure it out, I can find out a possible generator for your problem. Haven’t heard of this before, neither it was reported, so I’m thinking it could depend on your installation or a conflict with some of the plugins (?).

Yeah, it’s a really unusual bug. Well, it’s really not more than an annoyance; I can just re activate the theme every time a change a widget.

One problem I’m having though is that my home page doesn’t use the title tags that my plugin, All in One SEO, tells it to use. Whats up with that?

Thomas, if you want to diplay it in single post pages, open the “single.php” file and look for this:

Add your display code after the line containing the_content() function, before the DIV closes.

Same technique applies for archive type of pages: index.php, archive.php, search.php.

Zettt, please send me via email an archive containing the index.php of the theme and a complete screenshot (top to bottom) of the Control Panel so that I can see what setting you use. I believe it has something to do with how many posts are displayed in full…

Edit: Problem solved, Zettt added a code line by mistake to the theme’s code. Everything is cool.

Simple Balance is amazing. The customization is fantastic. I was wondering if it is possible to have two 250 x 250 google adsense banners on top of each other in the right sidebar. I’ve activated 8 boxes and tried putting the code for the second 250 x 250 banner in the 2nd, 5th, and 8th box of the theme options but the second adsense won’t pop up. Thanks!

EEk, I got some weird lines at the top of the blog where my blog title goes and cannot figure out how to get rid of them. The lines are actually on top of my blog title. These change color with each template. I tried removing the background.png temporarily and that is not where it is coming from. any idea how to remove that? I check it in IE and Mozilla. Other than that this is a really nice template.

Rhonda, you might consider editing your blog’s title. “theranchersdaughter.com” is simply a lot bigger than that columns width and it breaks the template since there’s no space in this title to automatically break it on more rows. Not to say that such a title is not really helpful. “The Rancher’s Daughter” would be way more appropriate. Trust me, it will solve your problem.

I need do “use up” the space on the right and left sides. I gotta insert some photos that are degrading when forced to a width of 500. That will be important. Where can I adjust the fluid width of right side, left side and expand to i end up with a take the space sort of template?

I had to “squish” my photo to fit on this page:

http://theranchersdaughter.com/?p=366 and it is all grainy now, but look at all the space on either side especially to the left. I need that space reclaimed for my photos.

What i guess i meant was.
i was using this theme:
Atahualpa

and it spanned the screen, i had lots of room in the middle with little space being taken up on the sidebars. I need more space in between the bars (guts). for the BODY, i gotta span the max. how i do that? donation your way you help me fix it. I want to put much bigger pictures in the BODY MAIN section, there is a lot of wasted space to the right and left of each sidebar, I need to reclaim that space so I can use it in the MAIN body. I need 100% space.

I was about to try using different sidebars on different categories or pages, that has been a big problem with some of the themes I’ve tried, before I got too far into it I thought I might ask advice first. I’ve printed out a good bit of documentation on it, but it did not work with the atahualpa theme.

I recently activated Simple Balance 2.2 theme on my site but I was getting this error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘{‘ in /home/content/o/n/l/onlinetravel36/html/wp-content/themes/simplebalance/header.php(17) : eval()’d code on line 1

It seems that my copy is unlicenced. Can you please help me sort this out? I’m really impressed with the theme. Thanks!

Hello Alex, I am having issue with duplicate content. I already customized my permalink to /%category%/%postname/ and Im still seeing pages/2…etc when checking my indexed pages. If you could suggest plugins compatible with the theme that could hide this tags,archives and pages?

Your Simple Balance theme is nice; I’ve just installed it and am tweaking it; however, some of the design options seem to be degrading as Worpdress upgrades security issues and makes other changes. I’m using the most up-to-date WP version 2.8.4, and the custom logo image, using the image’s url, won’t display when using the content/sidebar/sidebar template–the logo image will only display in the other template. Are you planning on updating the current Simple Balance version or is this basically it for the SB theme, and will you be creating more themes in the near future?

thanks awesom themes, so many options, its my wordpress dream theme come true, lots of ad spaces. Just one thing, themes often have 125 ad spaces, but i prefer bigger ads, 250-300, love themes with big adspaces. Thanks for the theme, i wish they were all this adaptable

I have installed wordpress locally, and the default theme works fine. When I switch to simplebalance, it will not display posts. In the Admin section, posts are absent, although the number in the DB is still displayed.

A featured post DOES display on the blog page ok, but clicking on the link takes to the post and just prints ‘Not found.’ in the content space. No post info at all.

I’m guessing something is up with the db access, but I don’t know how simplebalance manages things differently form the default theme.

Hi Alex,

Very nice theme and I like it a lot. Unfortunately am a little confused and I need a hand to make it..

Am quite messing up on codes at header.php. What I want to happen is that if I hover over the top menu I will see each subpages and will be able to click on it

I installed the theme Simple Balance but it is not working properly. It’s showing :

Is there any way of having an animated featured slider instead of just a static featured post? I want to be able to highlight a number of articles and include images of each.

If it’s not possible within Simple Balance, could you perhaps recommend plugins which would work with the theme please?

How could you switch the left and right sidebars around? So that the left sidebar is the right sidebar whilst the right sidebar is the left sidebar. I have been futzing with it but haven’t been able to get the perfect layout. Ideas?

I am having a problem with this theme. Everything (all text, posts and comments) are center justified. Is there a way to make the default to left justify? I am also having a problem with pictures and text wrapping. I am doing it correct and it looks correct when I’m in edit mode, but once I publish the article has the picture centered with no text wrapping. HELP!

Just found this theme from Google search. It looks great, however it has no place for banners. I’ll try to tweak it to make way for 250×250 banner spot in right column or may be tweak header to get 468×60.

Jake, you need to have either a decent knowledge of XHTML & CSS or get a designer/developer to do the adjustments for you, as it’s not something that you can change with a simple line of code. There are quite a few interdependent elements that need to be considered.

Hi Alex;

Been looking at your theme and it does look great. Probably one of the closest themes that me and the guys have been looking for; for our project. We only have a small problem, our marketing guy would like a little more advertising space. IE. bigger top banner and instead of 125×125 spaces maybe 250×250 space and for both instances to be able to use a sort of flash run through advertising process.. Unfortunately I only have a little CSS/coding knowledge and don’t really know how to make this possible.

I was wondering whether you’d be able to work with us; on getting your theme to fit better with what we were looking to do? In return we could maybe make a donation to the theme

Hi,

first I want to congratulate you for this wonderful theme
who until recently worked perfectly (for me)
now i get: “Not found.” on every article or page
i have upgrade the wordpress to 3.1.3 and i overwrite the theme files just to be sure they are not broken

is the a problem with this theme and the last version of the wordpress?

if i change the theme i see the articles & pages

this is very weird
the same is happening in the admin part of the site

if the Simple Balance theme is selected i cannot acces any article / page in the editor but i see: ALL (XYZ), Publish (XYZ)… but the list is empty, the message is: “No posts found”, “No pages foud”

if i change the theme i see the pages & articles on the frontpage and in the adminitrative part

@Silviu, the theme has not been updated in a good while. There a big chance it has lost “contact” with latest WP versions, although I’m pretty much sure there aren’t many pieces of code that could turn out to be conflicting. Have you tried activating the theme, and after, deactivating all plugins. There’s always a chance of a conflict between theme and plugins. You could identify the problem like that. And if the theme works, try reactivating the plugins you use one by one.

I am a newbie and I love the Simple Balance 2.0 Theme and using it on my website http://www.pakzil.com I am facing one problem, I want to add NEW POSTS on an other page like Admissions or Tenders of my website in simple balance theme.

My second question is how to change the logo live in WordPress setup/dashboard, any suggestion to change the CSS live. Because I dont have the theme files now.

Please help me, I am in big trouble.

Dude! where are you? I know you would be very busy working on themes and other stuff.

I am using Simple Balance 2.0 theme in my website http://www.pakzil.com, I am having one problem in posts.

I add many posts on daily basis but it shows only 10 posts on homepage which is weird. I want all posts available not just 10.

Please help me where to increase the posts limit.

Hey man,

Try “Settings > Reading” in WP Dashboard to increase your limit, see if that works. Anyway, the theme was not designed to have a infinite scroll, AJAX queries for posts and such. It basically only returns the amount of posts you set to be displayed per page and not more.
