Twitter button WordPress plugin

Since Twitter is yet to offer an alternative to those less savvy with code implementation, I’ve decided to offer you a WordPress plugin to help you include the official Twitter Tweet button in your blog posts. Download the plugin and from this point on, it’s all as easy as 1-2-3.

Current plugin version: 1.1
Supported WordPress versions: Most recent. Pre-3.0 versions not yet tested.

Twitter Button WordPress Plugin Options

To easily adjust and include the Twitter button in your blog posts, you have a plugin administration panel. Here’s a screenshot of the options:

Plugin Updates

Version 1.1 has been released. Download link is still the same (above). Fixed a bug that prevented recommendations to be displayed. Please re-download and re-upload. No need to deactivate the plugin. Just overwrite the files in order to keep your settings.

Known issues

Since Twitter did not offer an image based alternative to the button and counter, feeds will only display a CSS styled Tweet button without a counter. As soon as Twitter completes their API, I will also implement it in the plugin.

* Support for the ‘Twitter Button for WordPress’ plugin will be offered only through the comments. Thank you for downloading and enjoy your new retweet button!

  • Looks promising and better than TweetMeMe. Awesome work dude. Thanks!

  • Going to need a way to not auto show the output and have a php for display. More advanced users will need this

  • @Anything Graphic: Thanks!

@Eric Hamby: Right now, I believe this was what most users needed since everyone just published tutorials copy-pasted from the Twitter app info. There are surely things that can improve the plugin and I’ve already considered them:
    - Master switch on/off for the display;
    - Shortcode to use per post;

Also, there’s a bug that affects the button in Google Reader, as it is stripped by the Twitter API javascript, and also by the arguments passed through the link arguments. But I’m sure Twitter will come up with solution to prevent this. Clearly, the solution would be to also offer an image format of the button, which will not be stripped from the feed. At that time I’ll implement it too. And I’m sure that they’ll also come up with an official plugin at some point.

    Thanks for downloading.

  • A shortcode to place it wherever we want in a post would be nice!

  • Awesome job on a plugin that is sure to spread rapidly. Good job on making it so timely.

  • So fast in coming up with a plugin. Good work Alex.

  • I knew someone would get this plugin out pretty quick. Its mighty fine Alex! One question, what does the recommended username function to do? Does it include another username within the tweet or something?

  • Hi Man Thanks for this Plugin I have Shared this Article in my blog! you can Check at http://t.co/s4xjFRv

    Thanks Again!

  • Nice work an’ very fast ;)

  • Hi, thks for this great plugin! It’s working fine on wp 2.9.2 !

    1) one question: I would like to have the page text continuing just beneath the tweet button? Do I need to put margin-bottom:5px; ?

    rgds,

  • Thank you for the plugin, installed at http://dinothemes.com, works great!

  • Plugins works but unfortunately a lot blog posts (old ones) are showing ZERO tweets. Tweetmeme is/was accurate. Do you any of you know why this is happening?

Look at your own blog post:
    http://blogsessive.com/2008/08/

  • @Jonny Rowntree: Here’s the info from Twitter on that: Recommend up to two Twitter accounts for users to follow after they share content from your website. These accounts could include your own, or that of a contributor or a partner.

Now, out of those 2 accounts they mention, one will be your own and the other, the recommended one.

@Borsato You need to make sure you remove the float property. Something like this for the “additional styles” should do the trick:

    display: block; margin-bottom: 10px;

Everyone, thanks for your comments and nice words! An update is underway to include a shortcode too.

  • Would it be possible to add the option to manually insert the template, as it adds a bit more flexibility rather than just the top or bottom of the post

    Thanks!

  • @Shalin Jain That ZERO tweets “bug” is actually caused by Twitter’s method to calculate tweets. They calculate them based on the number of search results on Twitter for the shared URL, and since their search history doesn’t go that far behind, some of the posts will display 0. The API they have provided is still far from perfect, but I think they said the button is hosted on a different server which might mean that from now on, all counts will not depend on the search anymore so new posts should be fine.

@James: As said before, I’m looking into adding a shortcode and even a php function for easier implementation in templates or post content.

  • Great work, thanks. Nice and simple and super easy to use. Installed great at http://www.driftworks.com :)

  • thks, for yr reply,

I just want to keep the floating effect, but I would like the text going further just under the twitter button. There is a white space between text and button. I tried with margin-bottom, but no luck.

I’ll show you what I mean: pls have a look to clarify my little request:

    http://www.borsatoo.be/star-wa.....p-je-ipad/

    pls advise, thks, best rgds

  • @Borsato By default there is no bottom margin on the button container. The “problem” is that just as with any floated element, text will flow under it according to the line-height property of the output text. You should play with the content’s line-height property and also the bottom margin of the button container. But I don’t recommend any. Set the bottom margin to 0 and let it flow naturally. It’s not a big issue, and the current line-height (space between lines of content) is really good and the text is easy to read.

  • Cant get it to work in FF its not showing the counter.

  • Eric, it’s working fine on my side in FF, IE and Chrome. Even if there would be a problem, it would only be caused by the code Twitter provided, as I haven’t used anything else.

Also, make sure to wait a few moments when loading. It takes a bit to apply the style to those links if your blog has a lot of plugins and javascripts loading.

  • Great work. Just added it to my blog and it’s working perfectly.

One feature I’d like that’s available if you use Twitter’s code is that you can recommend two people to follow. Thoughts on adding this option to yours.

Just tweeted about the plugin to make sure it gets around.

    Thanks again.
    @jonmrich

  • Jonathan, there was a bug that prevented the recommendation to be displayed. I’ve released the 1.1 version, that includes the fix for that. Now the output code should be exactly like the one provided by Twitter, although I can’t seem to see that recommendation even if I’m using the hardcoded version. Let me know if you guys are luckier than me.

  • Hi Alex,
I tried to install the plugin (at http://blog.tagliaerbe.com ), but I found 2 “little” issues.

I disabled the TweetMeme Button (it works fine), then I activated your plugin and I choose to display the horizontal button, after the content (float: right; margin-right: 1px; margin-top: 1px) , but:

    1) the button is displayed on near the the “counter button”, a row after where is the TweetMeme Button;
    2) the button don’t show any image. I mean that I see only the text “Tweet” that link to http://twitter.com/share, and not the image.

Have you got some hints for me? :-)

    Cheers,

    Davide “Tagliaerbe” Pozzi

  • @Tagliaerbe: Unless you reactivate the plugin so that I can look at the generated code, I can’t really figure out what’s happening. From the sound of it, the external JavaScript from Twitter did not load, that’s why the button doesn’t get styled. Reactivate it, set it and let me know (preferably via email – on my contact page) so that I can look at it.

  • Alex,

Thanks for coming up with this plugin so quickly! It’s big help. I wrote about my success installing it into our WordPress MU 2.9.2 site here:

    http://blogs.voxeo.com/behindt.....dpress-mu/

As I noted in the post, one thing I’d love to see would be the ability to not display the count if the count is zero. Given Twitter’s problem with the count, this is particularly relevant to *older* blog posts that did have a bunch of tweets but now have a count of 0 due to Twitter’s algorithm. Not sure if that’s something you can address in the plugin or if that’s something coming from Twitter.

Thanks again for the great plugin!

  • thanks for the plugin – works better than the ‘official one’on WP as it has some css styling…i’ll pass it round

  • Hi Dan,

I left you a comment too on your blog post.
The counter issue… That’s something that Twitter outputs automatically. I’m not 100% sure if it can be tricked to display only the button when no retweets are made, but I guess I can look into it.

As I was saying, compared to TweetMeme’s API, Twitter’s is far from perfect, but since the two of them work together, I’m sure it will evolve in the close future.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  • Great wordpress plugin!

Kudos and thanks for turning it around so quickly!

  • Great stuff! What if I wanted to display the button manually on any page? Do you have a function I can call?

    Thanx

  • Thank you SO much for turning this plugin around so fast. It works like a dream. Very much appreciated.

  • Outstanding! Thanks for pushing this out yesterday. One question, on my site: http://nextnewsroom.com , it appears to be cutting off the bottom of the counter image on a horizontal dipsplay. Any suggestions on how to fix?

  • Thanks for this, but could you tell me why it works on all the pages but is not working on the posts on the front page?
    http://www.cfink.com/
It works just fine on the top post and on all the interior pages, but, as you can see, the code breaks on the posts. I’m using Thesis.

Any clues? This is an example from the site.

“Tweet(This is where the button should be, but if you go to the site, you will see text, and my cute Goldendoodles.) You can put your own background’s on Google’s home page. How cool is that? Just go the Google Blog and follow the directions.”

But the actual post looks fine.

    Thanks,
    Cyndi

  • Thanks for this! One question:

I am trying to get the button to appear in the top right of my posts and push all the content below it. Take this post: http://www.foodiebuddha.com/20.....pressions/ where the picture is flush with the tweet button. What css code do i need to use to always have this fixed in the upper right and have it push anything else after it down a notch?

here is what i entered in the box:
    styles box:
“float: right; margin: 10px, 20px, 0px, 10px; display: block;” (minus the quotes of course!)

  • @Chris O’Brien: I see it just fine on your site.

@Cyndi fink: The button works fine on your site. The problem that you have is actually due to the fact that on those short posts on your homepage you’re using the_excerpt() to show that small bit of content, and that’s what the excerpt does, it strips the intro to the content of all HTML tags. Thus, it also strips the button of these tags, making it a simple text in the end. Maybe you’re better of trying to use the_content() and define your excerpt by using the “more” shortcode.

@FoodieBuddha: First, when defining the margin you do not need to use commas between the four values. Also note that the margin should be defined like this-> margin: top_value right_value botom_value left_value; (see? no commas)

  • Dear Alex,
    Thanks for the solution!
    Cyndi

  • Hi Alex, thank you so much for the plugin! I added the source code from the twitter website directly into my theme but I decided to go with your plugin instead cause I wasn’t able to make the counter display on the main page.

You can check it out in action here: http://www.kevinbedard.com/liveandenjoy/

I have 1 suggestion: Would it be possible to make the counter appear both before AND after the post, like I did for the Facebook “Like” plugin.

If you know any way I could do that that would be very nice!!

    Thanks again!

  • I love the plugin. It was working for a while but now it says in the little box (DIV) that the “URL Requested Cannot Be Found”… I am going to deactivate until issue is fixed. However, I have tweeted this plugin because it is uber awesome and sexy…

Thanks for making such a great plugin :-)

  • So I’m thinking that it’s the Twitter API, and not the plugin itself… My oops :-) Love the plugin, again!

  • This is really great! It’s simple, nice and easy.

  • Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it so this plugin plays nice with the Facebook Share button? Ideally I’d like to have the Tweet button and Facebook share button side by side rather then on top of each other.

  • Excellent!!! Pretty easy and all the options available!! thanks!

  • Thanks for the response Alex … it’s still not generating the right format … the picture is still pushed to the left and not down
    http://www.foodiebuddha.com/20.....pressions/

    Much appreciated!

  • @Jason Yormark: I cannot be 100% sure on how you got the Facebook Share button inserted, but fact is that it has a styling of its own:

    <div id="fb_share_1" style="clear:left; float: left; margin-right: 10px;">

Since it comes right after the Twitter button, which is also left floated, the “clear: left” instruction on the Facebook button container makes it drop bellow the Twitter button. Try to remove ONLY that “clear: left;” instruction and see how it affects the display.

  • You’re the man Alex. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

  • Do you know how to make it be on the same line as the Facebook Like plugin but right aligned?

Well done on such an amazing plugin that does the job perfectly.

  • Never mind I managed to do it. Thanks

  • Tot ce e moca si ma scuteste de efort e bun :) Thanks, keep up the good work. (english translation)

  • Great plugin…Just a quick question, I have the tweet button set to vertical, but for some reason the button sits horizontally on some of my posts.

    Any ideas?
    http://helablog.com

    Thanks

  • I don’t understand why there are just two ptions to choose: before or after content. I want both. By the way, it would be better if you give differents options: at the top I want the vertical counter and at the bottom the horizontal counter.

Please update the plugin if you have some free time.

    Thanks buddy.

  • By the way, I have to thank you for your plugin, it’s not perfect but you did a great job.

  • @Aron: I’m sorry, but I cannot go through every post on your blog to see where this happens. I took 2-3 posts randomly and the button displayed properly.

@David: It’s a good suggestion that I will definitely consider for the next update. Thanks!

  • So awesome! That plug in was a seamless install and works perfectly. I’m so grateful for your blog, its been a huge influence on my choices re: research/becoming knowledgeable on all things wordpress/CSS customization as I tested, tested and tested some more in getting my blog set up (9 months and counting, yes, I could have had a baby by now) still testing, but better well-prepared and uber knowledgeable than not.
    Many thanks :)
    Jess

  • Hi Alex – Fist, great job on the plugin. I’ve been using it on a my site for a week or two and really like how it lays out. I was wondering if you could help me figure out why I can’t get the Twitter button and Facebook like button to behave together on another site I help run http://ignitephoenix.com. It seems to work fine on my site and doesn’t on IP’s even though they have the same styling. I realize they are in different divs, but just wondering if I’m missing something. Any tips to help?

    Thanks,
    Michael

  • @Michael, the Facebook like button, is not JUST a button. It has some extra space reserved around it (450x80px total) to display images of friends that have “liked” the post. On your personal site, your content area is larger than 450 + the Twitter button, therefor, they both fit on the same line. Not on ignitephoenix.com though, which has a sensibly smaller content area.

  • Thanks, Alex. Makes sense.

  • Hi Alex, I have been trying out other Twitter tweet plugins, but most of the counters on them reset to 0 every couple of days.

So I am back to using yours since it seems to be the most stable.

You replied to a previous comment of mine regarding the plugin showing verticle on some posts and horizontal on others.

    Here is an example:
    http://helablog.com/2010/09/tu.....er-camera/

    http://helablog.com/2010/09/ol.....mber-14th/

Any suggestions as to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Aron

  • Sorry, I forgot to add the verticle example

    http://helablog.com/2010/09/im.....y-maggots/

  • I have your twitter plugin installed, and it looks beautiful. I have tried several facebook plugins and am unsatisfied with all of them, especially after seeing your twitter plugin. :)

However, I did find ONE fb plugin that would show on the front page of the blog, instead of only inside the single post page like your twitter icon.

    http://jenphotographix.com/blog/

    Any ideas?

    Daniel

  • Thanks man.
My site has been having so much problems with plugin conflicts and could not get other versions to work on my site, but yours was spot on.

Are you creating a facebook button or recommending one?

  • Hey,

Is there a way to add this button to pages manually?

    Cheers

  • A simple plugin to implement…it looks lightweight.

  • Merci bien, ca évite bien de retoucher au thème :)

  • Good job on the plugin.

  • Finally a plugin that works!

  • Hi Alex,

I am a bit confused – your screenshot shows quite a few config options, while after installing a plugin on my wp 3.1 i have only: Button placement, Button layout and Your twitter account options…

    what am i missing?

  • Ok… I know what has happened … After I installed your plugin, WP started displaying notification that update is available. I updated, but I got a totally different plugin as a result! Thats why the options were different. I think there is a name conflict somewhere…

  • Great plugin…Just a quick question, I have the tweet button set to vertical, but for some reason the button sits horizontally on some of my posts.

  • there is a french translation for this plugin ???? thanks !

  • how can i implement this manually?

  • Hi, thanks for this great plugin! Works fine for me! MANY THANKS!

  • nice work buddy…i installed it.thanks

  • Thanks Alex, just installed this plugin on my new blogs. It’s sweet.
